FAQ - frequently asked questions

A1. Depending upon the type of application and need you can opt between a backup power or power-conditioning UPS. Backup UPS saves power and electricity bills in comparison to double conversion Online UPS and if the application is not critical and the requirement is only for process continuity then a Back up UPS would suffice.
If the load is very sensitive and of critical application the need is of Uninterupted Quality Power rather than uninterupted power. This is because the life of the connected equipment is directly propotional to the quality of the power and the equipment/ process uptime can be greatly enhanced or optimised using Power-Conditioning Online UPS.
A2. Choosing among the different options and technology advantages offered by different vendors can often be very tricky indeed. Should I for an Industrial grade UPS, UPS with isolation transformer, DSP technology, PFC technology; depends on the type of load electrical and environmental conditions under which the UPS is required to operate.
If the load is Industrial, it is a better idea to opt for UPS for Industrial application or Industrial grade UPS. If there is a backup generator, it is recommended to opt for PFC UPS. DSP technology enhances the protects and power quality. Galvanic isolation is required at the output if the premium grade, high quality power with comprehensive power protection is the need.
A3. Load study reveals the load PF, input harmonic current, surge/crest etc that will determine the buffer capacity required to handle the existing load and add up the spare capacity for the future expansion in the next one year to arrive at the capacity of UPS.
A4. Technical jargons like THDi, transient recovery, input voltage window are to be very closely considered and compared between the offers. SNMP or GSM for remote power monitoring is a good feature to opt for. Crest factor of UPS recveals its capacity to handle surge lodas without derating. The output voltage regulation (Phase-Neutral) during imbalanced loading is also a critical parameter to consider.
A5. Although you can use a conventional commercial grade UPS for Laser cutting machine, considering the cost of investment and loss of downtime, its a better to opt for Industrial Grade UPS which are ideally designed for tough loads.
A6. Yes you can by opting for suitable UPS, by getting a site and load study done.
A7. Battery capacity should be calculated with multiple power interuptions in mind, the discharge current is another factor that needs to be considered while calculating the AH for better life of battery. A tight claculation leads to premature failure of batteries and can lead to process downtime.
A8. If the operator / user is very near the UPS and is connected near the load, remote power monitoring may not be required as long as the application is not very critical. However remote power monitoring enhances power availability and avoids ungraceful shutdown of connected loads.
A9. Load sharing paralell redundant UPS with N+1 offers the advantage of upgrading the UPS capacity and also redundancy. PRS with N+1 is the best option if dynamic load expansion is a requirement especially with IT loads. However if the loads are Industrial in nature and redundancy is a necessity, the serial redundant hot standby is a better option in handling shortcircuits than PRS.
A10. Instead of manually bypassing the load to mains during an evantuality of UPS shutdown, a static switch(Thyristors back-back) automatically bypasses the load without interuption and ensures uninterpted power from mains - this is called static bypass.
A11. Depending upon the discharge current, type of cyclic discharge, opearting temeperature, backup required etc a SMF or tubular batteries are opted.
A12. Most often the solution for a particular problem becomes a source of another problem. This is true even in the case of Online UPS. The UPS pollutes the input power source by injecting harmonic current back into it. Input Power factor correction uses advanced electronic circuitry integrating high performance IGBTs. These reduces the running cost in terms of electricity bill and prevent the overrating of electrical wires, reduce reflected harmonies back to the source and provides better utility of grid/generator power; the UPS is guaranteed to protect the upstream sensitive equipments. The UPS is utility friendly and generator compatible.
A13. Smart chargers with temperature compensation, constant current-constant voltage with intelligent time bound boost and float voltage configuration using a DSP is the best charger for optimum battery life. Built-in battey charge equivaliser is also highly benefecial.
A14. Yes the ecomode option in Online UPS does save electricity, but why opt for Online UPS if the loads can handle the voltage variations during mains. Alternatively a servo-controlled voltage stabiliser with a backup UPS would be a better option for process continuity.
A15. Transient response of a UPS necessarily means the time required by the UPS to correct the voltage within the permissable bandwidth to respond to sudden increase or decrease of load.
A16. Indian UPS manufacturers consider the input voltage, environmental and power condition which is considered to be harsh as per International parameters and hence these UPS lasts longer in Indian power conditions. Wheras imported UPS are designed considering International power conditions and hence are prone to failure especially under polluted power condition.
A17. Capability to handle large inrush load current, ability to handle low PF and high load current harmonics are very important for a UPS in Industrial environment. Due importance is to be given to creepage in PCB design, use of connectors and transformer design. UPS for Industrial application should be capable of handling back feed of regenerative loads.
A18. Yes definitely the UPS can be customised to handle any type of motor; The factors to be considered are (a) What kind of motor is it? Is it DOL, line motor or motor with VFD etc. The initial starting current, running current, PF, current THDi, type of motor operation etc.
A19. Is it a power-conditioning Online UPS or Is it just voltage stabilising Online UPS is the first point to be considered, secondly Is it a commercial UPS (Normal UPS that is used for all general application) or a UPS for Industrial application? Can it handle regenerative load? These are some of the points to be considered before deciding a UPS for CNC machine.
A20. Double conversion losses amount to 35%-40% of increased electricity bill and using an Active Shunt UPS is the only solutionto the mentioned problem. Active Shunt UPS ensures seamless transfer(Zero tranfer time) during generator chang-over without double conversion losses saving 3%-4% of electricity bill in comparison.
